5 Reasons to Embrace God’s Rest

We like to go, go, go! Okay, so maybe we don’t like to go all the time but we still do it (whatever it is). Society is constantly telling us that there is something else to be done — so we do it.  Rarely we do have time to rest.

But what if, in listening to society, Christians are missing the opportunity to be a testimony about God’s rest?

I’m constantly having to be reminded that rest is a gift from God. It’s something that He wants His children to enjoy. Not just for our own sanity, but because rest is a testimony that we trust our Heavenly Father.

5 Reasons to Embrace God's Rest

In case, like me, you need a mini-lesson on why it’s important to rest, here are five reasons Christians need to rest.

1.Rest is something God builds into His travel plans.

And he said, “My presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.” Exodus 33: 14 (ESV)

If we’re always having to do something, then maybe we need to consider the possibility that we’re not following God’s presence. Our Heavenly Father sometimes gives us a lot to do. The season of action might seem long but God builds in rest stops. Those busy times will ebb and flow like the seasons of nature and in those slower seasons He plans time for rest.Exodus 33: `4

2.Rest acknowledges Christ’s love.

It is in vain that you rise up early and go late to rest, eating the bread of anxious toil; for he gives to his beloved sleep. Psalm 127: 2 (ESV)

We are His beloved and one of the many ways that He shows His love is with rest. He wants to give us rest from busyness. If we’re always trying to get a bit more out of our day then we’re ignoring the “I love you” that’s being offered to us.

3.Rest is when God can do something mighty in us.

But they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint. Isaiah 40: 31 (ESV)

When we rest and wait, God can do some pretty awesome things. When we’re still, we’re not getting in the way of His renewal process. Sometimes that mighty thing is not losing our temper with someone or it might be God giving us directions to His purposes.Isaiah 40: 31

4.Rest is a testimony of better things.

Better is a handful of quietness than two hands full of toil and a striving after wind. Ecclesiastes 4: 6 (ESV)

The things of this world are meaningless. We can’t take money, fame, reputation, or likes to Heaven with us. When we rest, we demonstrate to the world that we actually believe that. Matthew 6: 25-33 tells us that God knows all that we need. He takes care of the birds of the air and lilies of the field so He’s more than capable of taking care of us.

5.Without stopping to rest, we’re actually being disobedient.

Let us therefore strive to enter that rest, so that no one may fall by the same sort of disobedience. Hebrews 4: 11 (ESV)

We can read in the Ten Commandments that God designated a specific day for us to rest. When we don’t rest then, or any other time, we’re choosing to disobey. Failing to rest is a deliberate choice to do something contrary to what God’s asks of us.
