Be: A Christian’s Way of Living

“Be” is such a common word that when I searched BibleGateway, it told me, “Your search only contains words that are very common.” But what if I wanted to see just how common? Did you ever think that, BibleGateway? Well, did ya?

Be is defined like this: to exist or live; to occupy a place or position; to continue or remain as before. (dictionary.com) Basically, it’s a way of living. Today’s society constantly reminds us to be present. With so much distraction it’s easy to live in the past or future or with our faces in our phones. But God has a lot to say about “be”ing as well.

As Christians, it’s these “Be”s that we need to be more aware of. These are not optional for us. God’s be’s are not some new-age mantra that helps us to live lives that are more peaceful by earthly standards. They are God commanded so we can be Christ-like to a world in need of a Savior.

Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go. Joshua 1: 9

And I am no longer in the world, but they are in the world, and I am coming to you. Holy Father, keep them in your name, which you have given me, that they may be one, even as we are one. John 17: 11

But as he who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct. 1 Peter 1: 15

And to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.  Ephesians 3: 19

Let love be genuine. Abhor what is evil; hold fast to what is good. Romans 12: 9

This list could go on and on but I think this gives us more than enough to ponder for today.

Some days I need to meditate upon the Be Strong and Courageous more than I need to dwell upon the Be Generous. I think we’re all like that. Sometimes we need reminded of one more than an other. It was from my own attempts be more Christ-like that this wood disc, word art came about.

I think of it as a sort-of fill in the blank. Whatever I need to remind myself to “be”, it’s there to help me. However, since you are not me, you might not need Be Strong and Courageous as often as I do. But what do you need to “be”?
